Opening Article 3: Server Fan
Server Fan Overview
The function of the server fan is to speed up the flow rate of air on the surface of the heat sink to increase the heat exchange rate between the heat sink and the air. As one of the two important components of air-cooled radiators, the performance of the fan often plays a decisive role in the effectiveness and service life of the server radiator. When purchasing server fans, we consider the following basic indicators of fans:
1. Fan power
The greater the power, the stronger the fan's wind power, and the better the heat dissipation effect. The power of the fan is directly related to the speed of the fan, which means that the higher the speed of the fan, the stronger the fan is.
2. Fan speed
The speed of the fan is inseparable from the power of the fan, and the speed directly affects the power of the fan. The higher the fan speed, the greater the air inlet delivered to the CPU, and the better the cooling effect obtained by the CPU. However, once the fan speed exceeds its rated value, the heat generated by the fan will increase after a long period of overload operation, and the longer the time, the greater the heat generated. At this time, the fan will not only fail to have a good cooling effect, but will instead "add fuel to the fire."
In addition, the fan may produce very strong noise during high-speed rotation, which may shorten the fan life over time; in addition, a higher operating speed requires greater power to provide a "power source", and the high power source is obtained from the power in the motherboard and the power supply. Once the load on the motherboard is exceeded, the system will be instability. Therefore, when we choose a fan, we should balance the relationship between the speed of the fan and the heat generation. It is best to choose a fan with a speed of between 3500 and 5200 rpm.
3. Fan material
The heat emitted by the CPU is first transmitted to the heat sink, and then the cold air brought by the fan blows away the heat from the heat sink. The speed of heat that the fan can conduct is determined by the material of the heat conduction fin that makes up the fan. Therefore, the material quality of the fan plays a great role in the heat conduction performance. For this reason, when choosing a fan, we must pay attention to whether the heat conduction performance of the fan heat conduction fin is good.
4. Fan noise
Too much noise will affect our mood when operating the computer. Too little noise is usually related to the power of the fan. The greater the power, the faster the speed. At this time, a negative impact is manifested, that is, noise. When we buy a fan, we must first listen to the noise of the fan. If it is too high, it is best not to buy it. Nowadays, fans have invested some designs in order to reduce noise, such as changing the angle of the fan blades, increasing the lubricity and stability of the fan shaft.
Nowadays, many cheap fans are oil-sealed bearings, composed of copper jackets and steel shaft cores. After a long period of work, the fan shaft is not lubricated enough, the fan noise increases and the speed decreases, which can easily cause the machine to overheat and cause crashes. In severe cases, the movement may burn out.
Nowadays, many well-known brands of fans have begun to use ball bearings, which use many steel balls as a medium to reduce friction. The characteristics of this ball fan are that it has high wind power, long life, low noise, but relatively high cost, and only high-end fans can use it.
5. Fan exhaust volume
Fan exhaust volume can be said to be a relatively comprehensive indicator, so we can say that exhaust volume is the most direct factor in measuring a fan's performance. If a fan can reach 5000 rpm, but if the fan blade is flat, there will be no airflow. Therefore, when it comes to the exhaust volume of the cooling fan, the angle of the fan blade is also a very important factor. It is easy to test the air exhaust volume of a fan. Just put your hand near the heat sink and feel the intensity of the blowing wind. Usually, a fan with good quality can still feel the wind even if we are far away from it. This is a manifestation of excellent heat dissipation effect.
6. Fan blades
If the other parts of the same fan remain unchanged, only change the blades from five to seven blades, and the air volume change may not increase much. However, in terms of fan speed, the speed of the seven-fan blade will be lower than that of the five-fan blade (with the same ventilation volume). If a seven-fan blade fan is used, the bearings will be worn and oil leakage will be less, and the fan life will be longer. If the speed of the five and seven blades is the same, the ventilation volume of the seven blades will be greater. The higher the fan speed, the shorter the corresponding life and the greater the noise. In addition, the thicker the fan blade and the greater the oblique angle of the blade, the greater the wind pressure. The entrance angle of the fan blade (maximum of 45 degrees) is also one of the important factors that determine the fan ventilation.
We know that the server AMD CPU generates more heat than INTEL, but the maximum temperature AMD CPU can withstand is also higher than INTEL. Because the AMD CPU generates a lot of heat, compared with AMD CPUs, the thicker the bottom thickness of the fan heat sink, the better, while the INTEL generates a little heat, so the thickness of the heat sink can be smaller. Due to the different thickness requirements of the heat sink, the ultimate requirements for the fan are also different.
For a thicker heat sink at the bottom, it quickly absorbs the heat from the CPU and stores more heat. In order not to keep the CPU working in high temperature environment for a long time. In addition to requiring the heat sink itself to have better thermal conductivity, a larger airflow is also required to blow away the CPU heat. If the heat at the bottom is to be blown away, the fan needs to generate enough air pressure to blow the airflow to the bottom of the heat sink, and the convection-based heat dissipation can start from the bottom.
