IE: Password protection

Internet Explorer 5.0, which comes with its own when Windows 98 is upgraded, makes web browsing faster, tidy and simpler. However, the default settings of IE5 require some changes, and some of its best features are buried.

If you are a Netscape Navigator user, don't skip this section, you will find that IE5 and its competitors coexist very well and for some tasks (such as saving web pages in full), IE is a better solution. If you use Quicken or some other application combined with Explorer, you will not have the option - IE is an automatic pop-up browser.

Password protection

IE5 adds a potentially dangerous new capability to the automatic completion feature of Internet Explorer. Not only does it simply prompt the rest of a URL in the address bar, this option provides saving the username and password so that you can automatically log in to a password-protected website. This is a hidden security vulnerability: If you save the username and password of your bank and broker business account, anyone using your PC can log in and get this information. On a Windows NT workstation, this option is relatively safe because you can prevent unauthorized users from logging into your PC, but Windows 98 users should invalidate this option. From any IE5 window, select Internet options under the Tools menu, click the Contents tab, and then click the Autocomplete button. In the area marked "Autocomplete applies to", the username and password items for the form are not selected. If you have accidentally saved some sensitive information, click the Clear Password button. Restart your system and make sure the settings change has worked.
