Peer-to-peer network connected through hub

1. About Hub

Nanshan (1) definition: Hub (HUB) is the smallest unit that centrally manages the network. Like the backbone of a tree, it is the gathering point of each branch, regenerating and amplifying the received signals to expand the transmission distance of the network.

Nanshan (2) Category: Generally, there are 8 ports, 16 ports and 24 ports.

2. Connect twisted pair cable

Nanshan (1) Turn the RJ45 head (crystal head) with one end facing the ground, and the flat side facing up; face the head outward and the opening is facing yourself, and the 8 holes are numbered from left to right: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8.

Nanshan (2) For an ordinary 10 megabyte (10M) network, peel off one end of the twisted pair wire and take two out of the four strands. There are four strands in total. Then insert these four strands into the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 6th holes of the RJ45 end in sequence. Among them, 1 and 2 are the same strands, and 3 and 6 are the same strands; the other end must maintain the same connection method!

Nanshan (3) If you have a 100 megabyte (100M) network, the recommended wiring method is to connect from hole 1 to hole 8 in order: white orange, orange, white green, blue, white blue, green, white brown, and brown; both ends are exactly the same connection method!

3. Server-side settings

Nanshan (1) This article will take the installation and configuration of the NE 2000 compatible series network cards as an example. If it is another type of network cards, please make sure that the installation has been correctly carried out. The other configuration methods are the same as those of the NE 2000 series.

Nanshan (2) The so-called server side here is the Win98 machine used for dial-up Internet access. If this type of machine is not required on this website, all Win98 machines will be set according to the following steps; if so, for the settings of the computer used as the Internet client, please refer to the next step "Client Side Settings".

Nanshan (3) Open the "Network" in the control panel. In the "Configuration" option, no matter what items are inside, follow the steps below.

Nanshan (4) First click the "Add" button, and double-click "Adapter" in the "Please Select Network Component Type" that appears; then click "Microsoft" in the "Manufacturer" column on the left, double-click "Dial Up Network Adapter" in the "Network Adapter" column on the right, and then "OK" to see that the "Dial Up Network Adapter" and "TCP/IP" protocols have been successfully added to the installed network components list.

Nanshan (5) Then add "adapter" in the same way, the "manufacturer" is named "Novell/Anthem", and the "network adapter" is "NE2000 Compatible", so you can add "NE2000 Compatible" and "Microsoft Network User".

Nanshan (6) Finally, add "Microsoft" two "protocols" "IPX/SPX compatibility protocols" and "NetBEUI" as well as "file sharing and printers on Microsoft networks".

Nanshan (7) For NE 2000 compatible series network cards, don’t forget that there is another step to set up. Double-click "NE2000 Compatible" in the list to open its properties window, then go to the "Resources" option, change its "Interrupt (IRQ" to "3", and change the "I/O address range" to "300-31F" and then confirm.

Nanshan (8) then binds the unit to a fixed IP address used in the LAN. This IP address is recommended to use "192.168." ("n" is any integer between 1 and 254); the IP addresses of each machine must not be the same! To set an IP address, double-click "TCP/IP-NE2000 Compatible" in the component list box (later the network card name) to open a window of "TCP/IP Properties", go to the "IP Address" item, click "Specify IP Address", and then enter the corresponding content in "IP Address" and "Subnet Mask" (for servers, the recommended "IP Address" is generally "192.168.0.1"; the "Subnet Mask" is both "255.255.255.255.0"), and then "Confirm".

Nanshan (9) also needs to set the "identification" item. Set "Computer Name" to a unique arbitrary value (Chinese or English characters), and although "workgroup Name" can also be any arbitrary value (Chinese or English characters), it must be ensured that this item on all machines is "exactly the same" content, otherwise it will not be accessible to each other!

Nanshan (10) does not need to log in to the domain in peer networks. Therefore, it is recommended to select the "main network login" method as "Windows login" to avoid the user and password prompt windows appear every time you enter Win98, regardless of whether you have a password or not.

After "confirm", restart the computer according to the prompts; during the startup process, you also need to enter CMOS and block the COM2 port (disable)! Because by default, the COM2 port also uses interrupt 3, which will conflict with the NE2000 network card.

After the restart of Nanshan (12) and others successfully, "Online Neighbor" will appear on the desktop. Double-click it to see the names of yourself and other computers in this peer network.

4. Client settings

Nanshan (1) If there is no server side in this network, all machines will be set according to the above method. Otherwise, for the client side, the method is roughly the same as the above, but it is different at the "TCP/IP attributes".

Nanshan (2) The other steps are as mentioned above. When the client side settings go to step (8) above, in the "TCP/IP attributes", in addition to specifying a unique "IP address" in the "IP address" option and the same "subnet mask" for all machines, you also need to set the gateway and DNS server addresses before you can connect to the Internet through the server normally!

Nanshan (3) If you want to add a gateway, go to the "Gateway" option, enter the server's IP address under "New Gateway" (for example, "192.168.0.1"), and then press the "Add" button to add it to the "Installed Gateway" list.

Nanshan (4) To add a DNS server, please go to the "DNS configuration options", click "Enable DNS", and then enter any unique host name in "Host" (can be the same as the local name or different), and can be any value or empty in "Domain". Then enter the server's IP address (for example, "192.168.0.1") under "DNS Server Exploration Order", then press the "Add" button to add it to the list of "Installed Gateways".

All other steps in Nanshan (5) are exactly the same as "server-side settings". Please refer to the operation.

Peer-to-peer network that is not connected through a hub

1. About this section

Nanshan (1) This section is limited to the need for HUB between two computers, but is only directly connected through twisted pair cables.

Nanshan (2) If there are three computers, you can omit the HUB by installing two network cards on one of the machines and then connecting them directly connected to the other two machines with a twisted pair cable.

Nanshan (3) Regarding the software settings, it is exactly the same as the method described in "Peer-to-peer network connected through hubs" above. Please refer to the execution.

Nanshan (2) peel off one end of the twisted pair wire, take two out of the four strands (assuming A-shares and B-shares), and there are four lines in total, and then insert these four lines into the 1, 2, 3, and 6 holes of RJ45 in sequence, where 1 and 2 are the same strand (such as A-shares), and 3, 6 (such as B-shares) are the same strand; then peel off the outer strand of the "other end" of the twisted pair wire, take out the two strands that are exactly the same as the other end (assuming A-shares and B-shares), and there are four lines in total, and then insert these four lines into the 1, 2, 3, and 6 holes of RJ45 in sequence, where 1 and 2 are the same strand (i.e. B-shares), 3, 6 (take A-shares), that is, it is just the opposite of the connection method of the other end, and the connected lines will form two interlaced and overlapping forks!

Peer-to-peer FAQ

Nanshan (1): I can see the machine where Win2K is located in the online neighbors of Win98, but when I go in, I always ask for a "password"! No matter what password I enter (including the administrator's password) it won't work! what to do?

Nanshan Answer: Other machines need to be accessedWin2K, you must have an account under Win2K! Although you have the administrator password, your Win98 username is not this name, and the username and password are not matched at all - so it still doesn't work! The solution is to either add a user with account and access rights under Win2K to Win98 and use it to log in to Win98; or create a new user account under Win98 in Win2K, and keep the password consistent. (If you want to see your current username under Win98, you can select the "Start" menu, which contains "Login xxx", and that xxx is your username!)
Nanshan can also enable Win2K's Guest account, so that any machine can access Win2K's machines directly from online neighbors. The method is to select "Start → Programs → Administrative Tools → Active Directory Users and Computers → Guest → Account → Account Options" in Win2K, and remove the small checkmark before "Account has been disabled".

Nanshan (2) Question: After I accessed Win2K through online neighbors in Win98, I found that there are only "NETLOGON" and other items in it! Other shared partitions are invisible! what to do?

Nanshan Answer: Make the following settings in NT, for example, to share the C drive with Win98 computer, select "My Computer → C drive → Right-click → Share → Share → New Share → C", so that the original share name C$ is changed to C! Other disks operate the same. If you want to get the share name back to C$, just select "Delete Share" in the above screen! --After setting up sharing using this method, Win2K/Win98 will completely form a peer network like Win98/Win98!

Nanshan (3) Question: How to enable "Internet Connection Sharing" under Win98?

Nanshan answer:First, make sure you have successfully installed itModem! Then enter the "Add/Remove Programs" in the control panel, go to the "Windows Installer" item, then double-click the "Internet Tools" in the list, and finally check the "Internet Connection Sharing" item in its component list and then "OK", and then follow the prompts to do it; if the system asks you whether you need to establish a network installation disk, select "No" to skip it; after the installation is completed, you need to restart the computer, you can see the "Internet Connection Sharing" item in the "Network" in the control panel, which means that the installation has been successful!

Nanshan (4) Question: How to share the Internet through Win2K?

Nanshan Answer: In Win2K, select "Control Panel → Network and Dial-up Connection → 8163 (for the established Internet connection name) → Properties → Share → Enable the Internet with this connection" in turn.

Nanshan (5) Question: After the shared Internet is set up, how to dial on the non-server side of the peer network?

Nanshan Answer: In the previous step, check "Enable request dialing", when the Win2K machine is not online and the workstation tries to connect to the Internet, the workstation will automatically issue a dialing command according to the prompt, and call the Internet connection on the Win2K machine to enter dial-up Internet access.

Nanshan (6) Question: My Win2K machine is in a local area network and connected to the Internet through another machine. How can all machines on this website be able to access the Internet using the DNS and other settings on my Win2K machine?

Nanshan Answer: Set the "preferred DNS server" of all machines (including your own) to the IP address of your Win2K machine; and set the "gateway" and "alternative DNS server" to the IP address of another machine.
