How many administrators are required to maintain 1,000 routers?

What are the appropriate benchmark numbers for IP router management? For example, to monitor and maintain 1000 routers and 1000 lines, how many employees need to be configured for each shift?

To set a standard for resources, we generally try to estimate the number of network devices that each resource can manage as follows:

·Highly complex network equipment: 15 to 20 units per employee.

·Medium-complex network equipment: 60 to 75 units per employee.

·Low complexity network equipment: 250 to 300 units per employee.

Equipment Type

·Highly complex network equipment includes enterprise switches and IP PBX switches.

·Medium-complex network equipment includes LAN wired and wireless routers.

·Low-complexity network devices include hubs and similar low-end devices.

For large institutions (annual sales revenue is over $1 billion), the scale of the economy can reduce the demand for staffing by 10% to 20%. For small businesses (annual sales revenue is less than $30 million), there is already a plan to increase 10% to 20% of people.

Enterprises with advanced IT capabilities and maturity and with over-average personnel, processes and technology applications can reduce IT costs and improve IT efficiency, and it is normal to reduce staffing by 10% to 20%. Standardization and simplification of the network will be achieved through the key to reducing the target of configuring personnel. On the contrary, if the personnel capacity is below average and maturity, the institution needs to allocate 10% to 20% of the personnel.
