Exploration of Windows Server 2003
Dissection of WinServ03 (I)
Let’s go to Microsoft’s server to winServ03 and see what it brings us.
In the last note (Welcome to .Net World), we learned about the general release of Window Server 2003 (hereinafter referred to as WinServ03) and the members of the Windows Server 2003 Family family. However, there is no introduction to the specific situation of WinServ03.
Today, let’s go to Microsoft’s server to winServ03 and see what it brings us.
One of the most important built-in features of WinServ03 is the Microsoft .NET Framework, which is a method used to build, deploy and execute XML Web Services and applications. .NET Framework provides a high-capacity, standard-based, multi-language environment, integrating existing systems with new applications and services, while providing flexibility to easily solve the challenges brought by deploying and operating Internet-scale applications. Through the .NET Framework, developers can establish and deploy XML Web Services on the Windows platform.
Although .NET Framework can now be downloaded and installed and executed on Windows 2000 Server, it is far less convenient and efficient than the current WinServ03. The .NET Framework integrated in the WinServ03 series is directly available. This can eliminate the need for additional deployment and management. Moreover, XML Web Services has been deeply integrated into WinServ03, and existing services, such as COM+ and Microsoft Message Queuing (MSMQ), can immediately enjoy the benefits. With just a mouse operation, any existing COM+ object can be converted into XML Web Services
Reliability
Microsoft's research on Windows 2000 downtime found that downtime in normal plans accounted for 76%. These planned downtimes include the upgrade or reconfiguration of the operating system, the installation of the service patch package, the security patch or the installation of the QFE emergency patch plan package. For users, the downtime in these plans will be greatly reduced, and Microsoft has made a lot of changes to these core features in the WinServ03 settings. Most server upgrades, patch installations or security patch installations in WinServ03 no longer require a system restart. Moreover, WinServ03 supports chained QFE to allow you to install the above patches at the same time. (Microsoft previously required users to install each patch independently).
Availability
WinServ03 improves product availability through technologies such as clustering, failure protection and failure avoidance. The new system adds cluster capability - supports 8 nodes. Memory mirroring support ensures that memory failure does not cause system crashes. PCI hot-swap technology that can freely plug and unplug PCI devices. The hot memory add function enables the server to add memory during operation.
In terms of supporting load balancing and failure protection, WinServ03 provides storage technology for multiple input and outputs. Microsoft has also improved its SAN support, which allows you to easily deploy SAN-based file systems without using a plan.
Microsoft said that Windows Server 2003 has the most powerful Microsoft products so far, not only making great progress in reliability and usability. At the same time, it also shows excellent performance in many aspects such as scalability, operability, security, and manageability.
Scalability
WinServ03 not only supports amazing memory up to 512GB, but also supports technologies such as NUMA and Intel hyperthreading in advance. Make it easy for you to allocate available resources on Windows Server mainframes.
A new Windows Resource Manager (WRM) program has been added to WinServ03 Datacenter Edition, which allows you to run multiple business process applications (LOBs) on a 32-bit server. For some more important services, you can assign priority to using processors and memory. By default, WRM will equally allocate processor time between different programs, however you can also use policies to plan their runtime.
Operability
Operability has always been the strength of Microsoft. Microsoft will continue to maintain this advantage in the WinServ03 family. WinServ03 will continue to be compatible with different platforms at a certain level through some standards such as XML Web Services and Simple Object Access Protocol SOAP. In addition, the 32-bit version of WinServ03 will be fully compatible with the 64-bit version, which is manifested as you cannot distinguish between 32-bit and 64-bit servers in network applications.
Security
WinServ03 will be the first important operating system released by Microsoft after the review of the "Trustable Computing" code in early 2002. WinServ03 includes a VPN security network management, the new IEEE802.1X wireless security standard, and DNS, DHCP, NAT, and IPv6 based on TCP/IP architecture. WinServ03 will disable IIS6.0 and more than 20 other services by default, and reduce the privileges of some services such as NetworkService and LocalService. WinServ03 includes powerful access control lists (ACLs) and policy settings by default. And network verification is refused for accounts with empty passwords.
Even after software is installed and deployed, your system can still be protected, and the new Software Restriction Policy (SRP) feature allows you to decide which programs can or cannot run in their environments. WinServ03 also supports SmartCard verification technology. When you want to perform security management tasks or access management rights, you only need to use the verification card.
Manageability
Microsoft has centrally improved several important management tools in WinServ03. Except for Windows Server 2003 Web Edition, other versions of WinServ03 support RIS quickly installation.
Manage your server
The new SRP feature can also help prevent approved code from running. When managing Duoduo system environments, it also supports the new MMC Group Policy Management Console (GPMC) plug-in, which will provide a scripting interface for managing group policies. The tool integrates RsoP, which allows you to get detailed reports from policies to specific users or computers. Although GPMC may not be included in the exact product (RTM), it can still be obtained through free downloads.
