Implement routing for ADSL Modem "soft upgrade"

Note: Small business office networks are economical and affordable to use ADSL shared Internet access. Upgrading ADSL Modem is a very technical job. If you are not careful, the equipment may not work properly, so please think twice before starting!

The usual practice is to use a hub and proxy server software, use one computer as a proxy server, and other computers share ADSL to access the Internet through this proxy. However, this way of sharing the Internet has experienced many disadvantages over time. The most obvious thing is that if the proxy server does not turn on, other computers will not be able to connect to the Internet. So can we bypass the proxy server and directly achieve access to the Internet through the shared ADSL Modem?

Yes, just use ADSL Modem with routing function! If the communication department where the ADSL you installed is located has server-side support, use ADSL Modem with routing function

That being said, but the ADSL Modem I used two years ago is the old-style type and does not have routing functions. Does the old ADSL "cat" who has followed me for many years have to be laid off? In fact, you can upgrade the early ADSL Modem devices to have routing functions. However, not any ADSL Modem device supports "soft upgrade". For example, if a USB interface cannot be upgraded, and devices with RJ-45 interface connected to the network card can be upgraded correctly.

Upgrading the ADSL Modem device is actually changing the content of the firmware that sets the data inside the device, modifying its operating mode to the routing working mode, and then refreshing and saving the data. Since the upgrade points provided by manufacturers that produce ADSL Modem equipment are different, the upgrade methods also have their own focus. The author can only briefly summarize the general upgrade steps. For equipment upgrades from different manufacturers, please refer to the specific product upgrade instructions:

1. Carefully check whether the nameplate number at the bottom of your Modem is consistent with the upgradeable product number indicated by the manufacturer's website. After confirming that your device can be upgraded, go to the corresponding website to download the upgrade software;

2. Modify the IP address of the network card connected to Modem, set it to 168.0.0.1, and at the same time, the subnet mask of the network card is 255.255.255.0;

3. Then set up a simple FTP server, and set the network IP address of the FTP server and the network IP address of the network card to the same, that is, 168.0.0.1. and start the anonymous user name and set the password to empty. Then set the folder where the downloaded upgrade software is located as the root folder that the user accesses;

4. Click "Start → Run" and enter telnet 168.0.0.1. Then you can enter the FTP username, password and software file name set in the login interface; when the screen displays whether you want to update the firmware, you can give "Yes" answer; after confirmation, the Modem will be restarted after a while;

5. Execute the telnet 168.0.0.1 command again to log in to Modem. In the login prompt interface, use the show command to view the current modem shape. If the new model logo of the current modem appears on the display screen, it means that the firmware content has been successfully upgraded;

6. Up to this point, the ADSL Modem device you use already has the routing function; when you want to manage this simple "router", just open the IE browser and enter 168.0.0.1 in the browser address bar, you can open a web page that specializes in managing routing functions;

7. In this interface, you can set the working mode of the ADSL Modem device to "Router", and then restart the ADSL Modem device; enter the web page of the management routing function again, enter your ADSL username and password, and then select the "PPPoE" connection method; after setting all relevant parameters, you can unplug the Modem power cord and then connect it again to enable the Modem to start again;

8. Return to the computer system directly connected to the ADSL Modem device, right-click "Online Neighbor" on the desktop and select the "Properties" command. In the "Network Properties" dialog box that appears afterwards, select "TCP/IP Protocol". Click the "Properties" button in the corresponding interface. In the settings interface that opens, set the IP address of the local computer to automatically obtain, and set the gateway address to 168.0.0.1, and then set the corresponding DNS server to the DNS server IP address of the corresponding ISP.
