16. Modify the default search engine of IE browser
On the toolbar of IE4.0/IE5.0, click the "Search" icon, and IE will call the default search engine Excite to search for you. To change the default search engine, you must change the Win98 registry. The IE4.0 modification method is: close IE, open the registry editor, find [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main], double-click "Find" in the right pane, enter the default search engine URL to change, for example, change the default search engine to google, and type / at this time.
The method to modify IE5.0/6.0 is: open the registry editor, find [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\ Internet Explorer\Search], modify the contents of CustomizeSearch and SearchAssistant in the right pane, and enter the default search engine URL to be changed.
17. Use phrases to speed up search
If only one word is given for searching, thousands or even millions of matching web pages will be found. However, if you add another word, the search results will be more relevant. When searching, two keywords are given and the two words are combined with AND (with logic), or a plus sign is added before each word. This and logic technology greatly narrows the hit range and speeds up the search. Fortunately, all major search engines use the same syntax. A quoted phrase means that only the page that exactly matches the phrase (including spaces) is the page to be searched for. For example, in the search description, there is the phrase "this exact phrase", then the search engine only searches for web pages containing "this exact phrase".
18. How to use phrase selection
Generally speaking, in web search engines, using phrase search to narrow the scope and find search results is the best way. However, using phrase search involves how to use a phrase to express a specific problem. Sometimes simply typing a question as a phrase works, especially on the Altavista site, because it uses the "Ask Jeeves" engine technology, which gives preset answers to common questions.
Enter "Why is the sky blue" on Altavista and you will find the answer in the "Ask Jeeves" section and give several web pages to answer this question. However, the simple and clear method of asking questions only works for some searches. Other phrases can also be used as search criteria, especially if one word in these phrases is very unique or the phrase is a unique combination of several words. Try searching with person names, product names, or even strings embedded in the program.
19. Cleverly use error messages
Search all or part of the error message as a phrase. For example: When the daylight saving time changes, Netscape Navigator (browser) will generate an error message, which contains the phrase "book marks have changed on disk". Enter the phrase on the google or HotBot site and you will find an explanation for the problem and how to deal with it.
20. The most easiest search method to ignore
Sometimes the phrase search is too precise or a phrase cannot accurately express the required information. Then you can go directly to the information source, this technology is "so simple that it seems not worth mentioning", but it is very effective. You don’t need a search engine at all, just go directly to the site that provides some information. Many times we can use the formula "www.Company Name.com" to guess the site of a certain organization. If you can't guess, go to Yahoo, or use a search engine. For example, if you want to find the manual for existing accessories for Dell, go directly to the site, want to know what news there is in Oracle, give it a try, and then go to the news column to read it. People get a lot of useless information in search engines, but forget to try this method. This technology can also be used for other search purposes and is not necessarily related to the company. Government agencies, vocational associations, and educational institutions can also provide good information resources. Please go for demographics and check out the list of recent meetings.
21. Find the author name, organization name, or company name from the top or bottom of the page
If it is a personal page, then is there a profile of the author, and see his education level, position, unit, etc.; if it is an organization or company, is there a detailed introduction page, and what is its history? What is the purpose of publishing this information? Have you heard of these individuals or units? Is it what you are familiar with? Is the reputation good? These will help you to tell the credibility of the content of the page.
22. You can get some clues about this website from the URL
For example: Most of the personal homepages with the symbol " ~” are personal homepages. You can also get some general clues from the suffix of the domain name:
.edu is an educational website, which can be both serious academic research or a homepage created by students at will.
.gov or . is a government website, which is generally authoritative and reliable, and will not release inaccurate information at will.
.com or . is a commercial website, the most common one. When introducing your own products, you often exaggerate yourself, so be careful to accept "critical".
.net network service company, providing services to commercial or individual users.
.org is generally a non-profit organization, and its views may be biased.
23. Click on the homepage of the site to see the relevant information of the organization
If there is no link to its homepage on the page and you can directly access the address at the front of the domain name, it is often the homepage of the website. For example: /staticp ... r_schedule/ This large number of URLs, you only need to delete all the letters after "/staticpages" in the address, leave them only, and then press Enter to see the homepage of the URL.
