May 1st May Day The Origin of Labor Day

May 1st of each year (5.1)

The origin of Labor Day

In 1866, the First International Geneva Conference put forward the slogan of the eight-hour working system. On May 1, 1886, a large-scale strike and demonstration tour were held in the United States with about 350,000 people participating in the United States, with the protesters demanding improvement of working conditions and an eight-hour working system was implemented. On May 3, the Chicago government dispatched police to suppress the police and shot and killed two people. The situation expanded. On May 4, the strikers protested in the Hay Market Square. As unidentified people threw bombs at the police, the police finally fired. A total of 4 workers and 7 policemen died, known as the "Haymarket Riot" or "Haymarket *". In the subsequent sentencing, eight anarchists were prosecuted for conspiracy/killing, four anarchists were hanged, and one was killed in *.

To commemorate the incident and the subsequent verdict of the protest, workers protests were held worldwide. These activities became the predecessor of "International Labor Day". The First Congress of the Second International held in Paris in July 1889 decided to regard May 1 as "International Demonstration/Travel Day" also known as "International Labor Day". In the United States, the eight-hour working system was not established as a national legislation until President Roosevelt came to power in 1935.

China

The statutory holidays of the Spring Festival, May Day and National Day are adjusted every year, and the national holiday will be held for 7 days, forming three "Golden Weeks". The "National New Year Festival and Anniversary Holiday Measures" was revised for the second time on December 14, 2007, adjusting the start time of the Spring Festival holiday from the first day of the first lunar month to New Year's Eve; "May Day" was adjusted from 7 days to 3 days, reducing 4 days; Qingming Festival, Dragon Boat Festival and Mid-Autumn Festival were added to statutory holidays, each with 3 days off. The May Day Golden Week will also become history. Since 2008, the May Day Golden Week has become a May Day three-day holiday.

China holds a large-scale workers' party every May Day.

In addition, in * and Macao, since its return, International Labor Day has been listed as a national holiday in the SAR and has one day off on that day. However, after Macau’s return, Macau will have various clubs and interest groups taking to the streets to visit the Macao SAR government on May 1st every year, which is the so-called “Macau May Day Tour/Travel”.
