300 Win98 Registry Applications—Tenth of the Full Guide to Use Registry
1. Automatic refresh
After adding a folder or deleting an object in the window, you need to press the key to refresh the window, which is very troublesome. Automatic refresh can be achieved by modifying the registry.
Click HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CURRENTCONTRO LSET\CONTROL\UPDATE, modify the "UPDATEMODE" value, and change it from "1" to "0".
2. Modify system copyright information
Click HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\DEVEOPER\SETUP, and in the right window, all copyright information generated when installing Windows 98 is saved. Right-click these string value keys to modify it at will. In this way, you can modify the original copyright information of the system without reinstalling Windows 98.
3. Speed up Windows 98 startup speed
Windows 98 can automatically load some programs to run when starting, and some programs are placed in the startup group in the "Start" menu. Some important system programs that do not require user interference are stored in the registry. If you want to speed up Windows 98 startup, you can delete these programs appropriately. Programs in the startup group can be easily deleted through the "taskbar". If the program is not in the startup group, it must be deleted by modifying the registry.
Click HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENTVERSION\Run, select the power-on self-start program that appears in the right window, and delete it.
Click HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENTVERSION\RunServices, click the Startup Program that appears in the right window to delete it.
The difference between Run and RunServices is that the programs in Run are run only after WINDOWS is initialized, while the programs in RunServices start running when the operating system is started, that is, the programs in RunServices run before the programs in Run, such as the power management program.
4. Delete "Favorites" in the "Start" menu
"Favorites" is designed to facilitate access to the homepage. It is of little use to users who do not have access to the Internet. You can delete it. Click HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENTVERSION\POLICIES\EXPLORER, right-click the mouse in the right window, and select the "DWORD" command in the "New" menu, name it NoFavoritesMenu, and set its value to "1". Restart the computer again.
5. Expand the right mouse button function of the "Recycle Bin"
"Recycle Bin" is a system-level desktop icon in Windows 98. Because its right-click menu function is not powerful enough, such as "Delete" and "Rename" functions in the right-click menu of "Recycle Bin", it brings certain inconvenience to actual applications. For this reason, we can expand the menu function for it by modifying the registry.
Using the REGEDIT used before this article, open to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F984E}\ShellFolder. When you see that the value named Attributes on the right is 40 01 00 20, this is the key. If you are a master, you will know that each file has four attributes: read-only, implicit, system and document. Each attribute has a specific number. If the file has multiple attributes, you just need to add up all the numbers. This is the same reason. Here is the meaning of the first character:
Value Right-click menu
01 00 00 00 Copy
02 00 00 00 Cut
03 00 00 00 Copy and cut
10 00 00 00 Rename
20 00 00 00 Delete
30 00 00 00 Rename and delete
40 00 00 00 Attributes
50 00 00 00 Rename and properties
53 00 00 00 Copy, cut, rename, attributes
60 00 00 00 Delete and Attributes
63 00 00 00 Delete, attribute, copy, cut,
70 00 00 00 Rename, delete, and properties
73 00 00 00
6. Disable "Folder Options" in "Settings" in the Start Menu
Open the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\explore branch, create a new DWORD value "NoSetFolders" in the right pane, and then double-click the "NoSetFolder" key value, and enter 1 in the "Key Value" box in the dialog box that appears.
7. Disable the "Taskbar and Start Menu" in the "Settings" in the Start Menu
Open the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\explore branch, create a new DWORD value "NoSetTaskbar" in the right pane, and then double-click the "NoSetTaskbar" key value, and enter 1 in the "Key Value" box in the dialog box that appears.
8. Hide subfolders in the start menu
Open the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\explore branch, create a new DWORD value "NoStartMenuSubFolders" in the right pane, and double-click the "NoStartMenuSubFolders" key value, and enter 1 in the "Key Value" box in the dialog box that appears.
9. Hide all drives in "My Computer"
Open the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\explore branch, create a new DWORD value "NoDrivers" in the right pane, and double-click the "NoDrivers" key value, and enter 1 in the "Key Value" box in the dialog box that appears.
10. Disable dialing in in dial-up network settings
Open the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Network branch, create a new DWORD value "NoDialIn" in the right pane, and double-click the "NoDialIn" key value, and enter 1 in the "Key Value" box in the dialog box that appears.
11. Disable file sharing in sharing settings
Open the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Network branch, create a new DWORD value in the right pane with "NoFileSharing", then double-click the "NoFileSharing" key value, and enter 1 in the "Key Value" box in the dialog box that appears.
12. Use asterisk (*) to hide the shared password
Open the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Network branch, create a new DWORD value "HideSharePwds" in the right pane, and then double-click the "HideSharePwds" key value, and enter 1 in the "Key Value" box in the dialog box that appears.
13. Disable password cache
Open the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Network branch, create a new DWORD value in the right pane with "DisablePwdCaching", then double-click the "DisablePwdCaching" key value, and enter 1 in the "Key Value" box in the dialog box that appears. Notice! Please use this setting with caution. At this time, the password cannot be changed in the "Password" property in the control panel. When logging in, the user can log in with any password or without a password.
14. Make Windows passwords a number and letter
Open the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Network branch, create a new DWORD value "AlphanumPwds" in the right pane, and double-click the "AlphanumPwds" key value, and enter 1 in the "Key Value" box in the dialog box that appears.
15. Set the minimum length of Windows password
Open HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Network branch, create a new DWORD value "MinPwdLen" in the right pane, and double-click the "MinPwdLen" key value, enter n in the "Key Value" box in the dialog box that appears, n is greater than or equal to 0 and less than or equal to 8.
16. Delete legacy items in the right-click menu
If the software uninstallation is not perfect, some useless projects will be left in the right-click menu. Legacy projects can be divided into three categories, and they have corresponding projects in the registry. The first type is associated with a certain file type, you can delete these commands directly in the folder options of the Explorer; the second type is the items that are included in almost all files, which are stored under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers in the registry; the third type is only valid for folders, which are stored under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell and HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers, and may also be found under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder and HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers. For the latter two cases, you can find unwanted items under the above key names and delete them.
17. Solve the problem that the original CD game cannot run after installing the virtual optical drive
After installing the virtual optical drive, the disk letter of the physical optical drive will move backward, causing the CD game that was already installed to fail to run. The solution is: find the subkey of this game under the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software primary key. After expanding layer by layer, you can generally find the key value of the CD drive letter installed, and change its value to the current physical optical drive letter.
18. Show the full name of the URL in IE
Open HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer and change the value of Show_FullURL to Yes.
19. Change the time when the "Wait" dialog appears when closing the application
You can use the Ctrl+Alt+Del key combination to quickly close the application (this method is especially suitable for applications that do not respond for a long time).
Clicking the End Task button will close the application. Clicking the "Wait" button allows the application to be in a waiting state, allowing you to do some work, and then try again to close the program's work after 20 seconds. To increase the speed of closing this program, you can change the waiting time when closing the application by modifying the registry. The following are the steps to change.
1Start the Registry Editor.
2. Open the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\desktop branch.
3. Right-click the right pane and select "String Value" from the "New" menu, a new key value name "New Value #1" will be added to the desktop subkey, and then change the new key value name to "WaitToKillAppTimeOut".
4. Double-click "WaitToKillAppTimeOut", and then enter 10000 in the "Key Value" box of the "Edit String" dialog box (unit is ms, the default value is 20000ms, that is, 20 seconds), as shown in Figure 11.
In order to shorten the waiting time for the system to shut down the application, you can reduce this waiting time to below 20,000ms, such as 10,000ms, 15,000ms, etc.
5. Click the OK button and close the Registry Editor window.
6. Restart the computer.
20. Control your registry checker
And is the new registry checker added by Win98. It automatically backs up a backup file every day when starting Win98. They are all stored in CAB compression format and are saved in Win98's SY**CKUP directory. Each file will occupy about 500K of space.
Don't let the registry check and backup at startup: Open HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run, on the right you will see "ScanRegistry", its value is "C:\Windows\/autorun", delete it; if you just don't want to backup and want it to check the registry at startup, please use Notepad to open the Win98 directory, find the line Backup=1, and change it to Backup=0.
21. Add commands to the menu of the Recycle Bin
Open the registry: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F984E} \Shell, if no shell is found, add one, add a new primary key to the shell, with the name of the content to appear in the menu. For example, if DOS is used, add a Command key under the new primary key, and set the (Default) content of the Command key to the command or file to be started. For example: C:\. Close the registry and right-click the Recycle Bin icon immediately, and you will find an additional menu!
22. Modify the registration name
We know that the login information cannot be modified after filling in during installation. Now provide a way to modify it: fill in the Start/Run menu and run the Registry Editor:
In HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion, there is a lot of information about Windows 98 registration below. Productld represents the serial number, RegisteredOwner represents the registered user name, RegisteredOrganization represents the registered unit name, Version represents the Windows 98 version name, and VersionNumber represents the version number. Change RegisteredOwner and RegisteredOrganization to other names and save the file. Double-click the file to confirm that you want to add the information in the registry item to the registry.
Complete the above operation, right-click on my computer, select Properties, and in the general window bar, the registrant and registration unit have been changed.
23. How to set the display method when changing desktop pictures?
The method is to change the following setting values of the registry before calling SystemParametersInfo (utilizing VB):
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Deskt-op\TileWallpaper;
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Deskt-op\WallpaperStyle;
The meaning of these two set values is as follows:
TileWallpaper WallpaperStyle Setting value of display mode
0 0 Placed in the center
0 2 Display side by side
1 - Expand
Note: [Expand] is to adjust the picture to the same size as the screen when the picture is not as large as the screen. This is a new feature added to Windows 98, but if your machine has IE installed, Windows 98 also has the same function.
24. Let Windows automatically execute a program when it starts
The common solution to this problem is to place a shortcut to the program in the [Start/Program/Start] folder. If you use this method, the user can still hold Shift when booting up to make Windows ignore the programs in the [Start] folder, which means it is not possible. Is there any way to make the program execute?
The answer is to place the program registration code (Registry) under the following SubKey: HKey_Local_Machine\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
For example, if the following Value is as follows, the Notepad program is executed when Windows starts:
Value Name Value Value
Notepad
When filling in, the part of [Value value] can be the full program name, but if the program name is added (without the full path), the executor must be located in the Windows directory or in the Windows System directory, the current working directory or the directory defined by the PATH environment variables. Windows can only load and execute. Take the program as an example. Since it is located in the Windows directory, only the program name is enough. As for the [Value Name] part, there is no limit, as long as it does not conflict with other Value names.
25. Right-click the Start menu to close the computer
Turning off the machine is one of the most frequently used operations in daily life. The following settings can simplify the shutdown process: Open HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell, select Edit/New Primary Key, name it Close, double-click the default on the right side of the Close subkey window and enter it in the key value bar to close the computer. It is the prompt message that appears in the right-click shortcut menu. If this item is omitted, the primary key name Close will be displayed in the right-click menu. Separate the shortcut keys to define the shortcut keys, and then create the next level subkey Command under Close, double-click the default on the right side of the subkey window and enter the ExitWindows string in the key value bar. Without restarting the system, just right-click the Start menu and select Turn off your computer to shut down your machine.
26. Improve the display speed of the menu
Click "Start" and "Run", then enter RegEdit to run the Registry Editor.
Open: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop, select New string value from the Edit menu
, the string value name is MenuShowDelay, press Enter, and double-click MenuShowDelay. Change the number of MenuShowDelay to adjust the speed. The range is 1-2000, and the default is 400. The smaller the number, the faster it is. If it is changed to 65535, it means that you have to press the key to display. Output key value 1. After closing the Registry Editor and restarting Windows, you will find that the submenu displays significantly faster in the Start Menu.
27. Edit BAT file
In the Explorer window, if you want to double-click an entry for batch file name to edit it instead of running it, then just change the "default" value of HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\batfile\shell right window key from "open" to "edit", and close the Registry Editor. When you double-click the BAT file, the notebook will pop up and load the BAT file for use and edit it.
28. Modify the names and icons of "My Computer", "Recycle Bin" and "Inbox"
As an enthusiast, Windows 98, "My Computer", "Recycle Bin" and "Inbox" cannot be too old-fashioned. It should have personal characteristics. "My Computer" is better called "XX Computer", and it is best to design a unique personal logo on your own to replace the original computer icon.
1. My computer
1. Change the name
Unless you use REGEDIT, I think you can guess too, open HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}, (Default). Modify the (default) on the right to the name you want.
2. Change the icon
Open HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}\
DefaultIcon, (Default). Change the right (default) to your icon file name.
2. Recycling station
1. Change the name
Open HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F984E},
(Default). Modify (default) to your favorite name.
2. Change the icon
Open HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F984E}\
DefaultIcon, (Default). Change (default) to the name of the icon file you like.
29. Change the name of the WORD inserted into the object into Chinese
Insert/objects in the WORD menu, it may be dazzling. Change the "default" value of the right window key of HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Equation 3.0 from "Microsoft Equation 3.0" to "Microsoft Formula Editor 3.0", close the Registry Editor, and then open WORD, you will find that it has been Chineseized.
30. Customize the window color anyway
Although Windows'98's control panel/monitor/exterior can define multiple window display schemes, you need to define the color of a certain part, such as a black button font, if you want to define it as red, you can do nothing, and modifying the registry can be easily implemented. Change the "Bottontext" value of the right window key of HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Colors to "255 0 0", close the Registry Editor, restart WIN98, and the red font will be displayed on your button. The string values of some colors are shown in the table below.
31. Change the display speed of the cascading menu
For those who are new to Windows'98, the cascade menu does not bring him much convenience. It is really not easy to execute a program like grabbing a balloon in the water. Now, just make a little modification to the registry, you can wait for double-click to cascading like Windows 3.2. Light up HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Desktop, right-click Desktop, select the new/string value, enter "MenuShowDelay", and then enter a number between 0 and 100,000 after this item to indicate the delay length, unit milliseconds, close the Registry Editor, and restart WIN98. If the delay length is large enough, it seems that the cascading menu will respond only if it is double-clicked.
32. Change the name of WINDOWS'98
Some users want to give their operating system a more romantic name, such as WINDOWS'98 Wolf Studio. If you want, change the "Version" value of the right window key of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion to "WINDOWS'98 Wolf Studio" (note the string value length & le29 English characters), close the registry editor, and then click Explorer/Help/About Windows'98, that is done.
33. Delete the unnecessary icons on the desktop
When you right-click the icons of the Recycle Bin, Inbox, and Online Neighbors on the desktop, you will find that they cannot be deleted. But in fact, it really doesn't need it, what should I do? First prepare the paper and pen, record the keywords of the branch under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Desktop\NameSpace and the string value of the right window (used when restoring), then delete the unnecessary branches, close the registry editor, restart WIN98, and look at the desktop, it will definitely disappear.
34. Delete redundant options in run and search
When clicking the Start/Run menu, some of the previous operations were saved in the open window. Some of them may not be needed. If you want to delete it, save these operations in the right window of HKEY_USER\.Default\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\RunMRU, just delete the unnecessary string values. Similarly, the search options are saved in the right window of HKEY_USER\.Default\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Doc FindSpecMRU.
35. Shorten the option of "New" on the desktop
When you right-click the blank space on the desktop and select New, a menu for creating multiple program files will pop up. Some of them may not be used frequently, such as Access database. You must want to delete it and shorten the menu. Now, open the registry editor, click Edit/Find the menu, enter shellnew, and then click Find the next one. After finding the appropriate file type, delete the entire shellnew branch.
36. How to invalidate the "Cancel" button when selecting Windows login (prevent anonymous users from logging in)
Although Win98 can customize its own usage interface and specify a password for each user, anyone can enter the system by clicking "Cancel" in the login window or pressing the ESC key, which is the so-called anonymous login. The following method can prevent anonymous users from logging in: Expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Network\Logon primary keys in turn, and create one if not; use Edit | New | DWORD (value), named "MustBeValidated", and all key values are added to 1; after restarting the machine, you will find that the method of entering Windows by clicking the Cancel button is no longer effective. (If you can't even get in, you can enter in safe mode and change its value to 0.)
37. Modify the right-click menu of "My Computer"
Run the modification registry and find HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D 8- 08002B30309D}, where DEFAULTICON is the "My Computer" icon. You see SHELL , expand it and create a new primary key under SHELL, that is the title, and create a new primary key under this primary key. The name must be COMMAND, modify the string value of COMMAND, enter the command line, and exit.
38. Show prompt information when Win98 starts
When Win98 is started, you can use your imagination to scare those timid illegal users. Open the registry to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Winlogon, right-click the blank space on the right, select Create a new string, enter the name as LegalNoticeCaption, double-click it, and modify it to the title you want to display. Note that the content here is as the title. You can enter the words "Warning" and other words, and then create a new string like above, with the name Log On Message. This is the information you want to display. Change its content to "get out, you!"
39. The method to select a user when canceling the startup
Once you delete all users in the user settings in the control panel, Win98 will still allow you to choose when it starts, and you will still have to choose if there are no users. It is such a low-power system. We can't stand the buttons every time we start, and reply to the original Win98. Open the registry to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Network\Logon, double-click UserProfiles on the right with the left mouse button, and modify its value to 0. When starting again, Win98 will ask you for the username and password. If you leave the password blank here, you can return to the single user status of Win98.
40. Hide the login name of the user on the computer (hidden body)
Every time you go on the computer, you can see the person who used the computer last time. How about it? If you don’t want to use the computer yourself, you will be discovered. Open the registry to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Winlogon, create a new string DontDisplayLastUserName, and modify the content to 1. The next time you get on the computer, the last person to be on the computer will no longer be selected in the user list.
41. Cancel the document option in the Start menu or clear the file in the document option
The document menu will collect files you use frequently. It can help you quickly open a used file. When you don't let others know what you have used, you have to find a way to turn it off. The way to turn it off is to go to HKEY_USERS\DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\ to create a new binary value with the name NoRecentDocsMenu and change the value to "01,00,00,00".
However, you may want to use the document menu on your computer and just delete them after shutting down the computer. Then you have to do this: still there, create a new binary value called ClearRecentDocsOnExit, and also modify the value to "01,00,00,00". Note that the comma between 01 and 00 is not the content, it is just separated by commas here.
If you want to prohibit the recently operated documents from being placed in the document menu history, then this is what you have to do: still be there, create a new binary value called NoRecentDocsHistory, and also modify the value to "01,00,00,00".
42. The mouse automatically activates the current window
Are you still using X-Mouse from early Power Toy components? Win98 already has this function, but no one knows it. Please open the registry to HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\desktop to see if the value of UserPreferencemask on the right is: B0,00,00,00, please change it to B1,00,00,00, now where your mouse points, the window there will automatically become the current window.
43. Lock the desktop and control panel
If you want your Win98 to be unable to change your settings when used by others, you have to make some effort. First of all, you have to not allow others to adjust the system desktop. This is an old method. You may already know that you create a new binary NoSaveSettings in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer. The value is of course 01,00,00,00. Now you have saved the desktop. The control panel of the settings menu is also a dangerous place. Open the registry and create a new binary NoSetFolders, and double-click it to change the value to 01,00,00,00.
If you want to take effect for all users, you can perform the same operation in the following directory; Hkey_Users\.default\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Policies\Explorer;
44. Lock the Start Menu
To protect your start menu from being modified, open HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer in the registry, create a new DWORD, called NoChangeStartMenu, modify its value to 1, haha, let it strike lightning, as long as you don't use DOS, the start menu will still be the one you start menu.
45. Rearrange the input method order
Whether you believe it or not, most people will add one or two input methods that Win98 does not have after installing Win98, but it is too troublesome to choose the input method you want. Please calculate how many times you have to press Ctrl + left Shift, or reorder them. Open the registry to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\keyboard layout\preload and see if there are 1 to 5 or even more below it. All your input methods are arranged from 1 to 5, but you can see that their default values are hexadecimal numbers, and they do not specify what input methods are. To determine what input methods 1 to 5 represent, please click the En icon of the input method indicator in the taskbar. Here, I also give the values of each input method that comes with Win98:
English (US) 00000409
Microsoft Pinyin Input Method Version 1.5 E00E0804
Fully spelling input method Version V4.0 E0010804
Zheng Code Input Method Version V4.0 E0030804
Intelligent ABC input method version V4.0 E0040804
When changing the order, you do not need to change their default values. You just need to rename their sequence numbers. You cannot name them as existing names when renaming. For this reason, you have to change the existing names to
A temporary name, and you can re-arrange the other serial numbers according to the name you want.
46. Retrieve the channel bar
Open the registry to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main, find Show_ChannelBand on the right, change its value to yes, and it is OK.
47. Tips for modifying desktop
Every special thing in Win98 has a prompt. For example, if you stick your mouse on my computer, you will have a prompt that what my computer is. It is not difficult to change this prompt. Go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D} and modify the content of the InfoTip on the right to what you want. The prompt for other special things is also changed in this way. If you don’t remember their IDs (that string of symbols enclosed in brackets), please use REGEDIT’s search function to enter the prompt you see. After finding it, you will be where you want to modify.
To disable them from displaying prompts, not changing them to empty contents or deleting InfoTip, open the registry to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced, and change the value of ShowInfoTip on the right from 1 to 0.
48. Faster optical drive, bigger cache
Nowadays, the optical drives have developed to 40X, but Win98 can only be set to 4X optical drives. If you don’t believe it, please click on the "System" in the "Control Panel", then select the last tab "Performance", click "File System", and then select the "CD-ROM" of the third tab, and you can see how big its cache is.
Do you want your fast optical drive to run faster using a larger cache? However, because all the settings here are physical memory, all users with less than 32MB of memory should be considered carefully, but for users with 64MB or even 128MB, there is no reason not to change it. Open to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\control\FileSystem\
For CDFS, you can see "CacheSize" and "Prefetch" on the right. If you are using the four-speed settings recommended by Win98, their values should be "0000026b" and "000000e4". We need to modify these two values separately. I have omitted the calculation method here. Please modify it according to your needs. After the modification, you need to restart it.
CacheSize DWORD
Default 0000026b
Moderate 000004d6
Larger 000009ac
Prefetch DWORD
4x 000000e4
8x 000001c0
16x 00000380

If you want to play the role of modification, you must use a 32-bit CDFS system. Please rest assured that Win98 has been used by default. For insurance, check whether the system uses 32-bit. Please go to the place where Win98 sets the optical drive cache, and then select the last tab "Troubleshooting". As long as the 32-bit disk system inside does not have a check mark, it means that 32-bit is not prohibited.
50. Increase the driver recognition level
Win98 can check the visa status of each driver, but the driver without a visa is installed without any errors, and it does not remind you that the driver who gets a digital visa means that the driver has passed Microsoft's test. In order to ensure that the system of Win98 is stable, you can make it install only certified drivers.
Open to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\DriverSigning, double-click the Policy on the right with the mouse, and modify its first value to be 01 or 02, 01 means 1
